History of Mathematics Lectures

A brief survey course on the history of mathematics. Emphasises the development of mathematical theories and ideas in light of their original motivations and contexts, with an eye towards the illumination this can bring in a modern teaching context. Also focusses on the role of mathematics in the sciences and in human thought and society at large.

The main text gives a big-picture narrative and includes embedded mathematical exercises retracing key historical episodes. The accompanying reader gives a parallel selection of excerpts from primary and secondary historical texts suitable for classroom discussion.
